Volunteers In Service to America (VISTA)

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s VISTA project got started with a new year of volunteers working in Milwaukee schools in late August.

VISTAs 2010-2011Milwaukee VISTA volunteers are housed at Parents Plus, and spend the school year working to increase parental engagement by starting Action Teams of parents and staff, and helping schools to get parents involved. The VISTAs have been working with schools around the state since 1997.

This year Casey Burns and Angela Rumsey will continue their work at MPS Central Services. Casey graduated from UW-Oshkosh with a degree in Sociology and Angela graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in 2009 with a BA in Anthropology and International Development. Angela is going on her second year of service with VISTA and Parents Plus.

Angie Domagalski is working at Milwaukee French Immersion School. Angie is from Milwaukee but spent the last year traveling the country serving with Americorps NCCC. Angie completed five projects with a team of ten other volunteers. Projects ranged from working with disabled adults in Black Hills, South Dakota to a disaster relief effort in New Orleans.

Kristen Donat is working with Alexander Mitchell Integrated Arts School. Kristen grew up in Oak Park, IL and spent last year finishing up her Gender and Woman’s Studies degree at the University of Wisconsin- Madison.

Finally, Michael Valente is serving at Clarke Street School. Michael was born and raised in Milwaukee and graduated from Marquette in 2007. Since graduation, Michael has worked as the chef garde manger for Outpost Natural Foods at their central kitchen in Bay View.

Parents Plus is excited for the coming year and lucky to have such a great group of VISTAs.
