The Parental Information and Resource Center (PIRC) works to enhance parental involvement for increased student achievement. We do this through several statewide programs, as well as programs focusing on the metropolitan Milwaukee area. Our programs include:

  • The Action Team for Partnerships Training Institute, which provides trainings on family-school-community partnerships. We also partner with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to place VISTA volunteers in  Milwaukee area schools.
  • The Wisconsin Parents as Teachers (PAT) State Office, providing training and technical support for organizations using PAT, an evidence-based national home visiting model for parents of young children.
  • Professional development (trainings by Parents Plus) for school staff statewide.
  • Trainings and workshops (trainings by Parents Plus) for parents, in such areas as brain development and advocating for your child.
  • Disseminating Supplemental Education Services  information to Milwaukee Public School parents.
  • The Early Years Home Visitation Outcomes Project of Wisconsin, a collaborative effort to administer nationally-normed outcome  measurement tools and improve early childhood programs.
  • The Parents Are Key (PAK) Program, which combines two effective early childhood home visiting models for families in the Milwaukee area.

Highlights for the 2007-2008 School Year

  • Helped enroll 3,437 students in Supplemental Education Services.
  • Provided 47 professional development trainings for education-related staff.
  • Provided 43 trainings for parents.
  • Provided direct services to:
    • 24,659 parents
    • 19,079 low income parents
    • 752 parents with limited English proficiency

Additionally, the 44 Parents as Teachers programs in Wisconsin served 2,869 children in 2,497 families.

The Parental Information and Resource Center uses both school based and school linked models throughout the state. Our partnerships allow us to work with all school stakeholders, including staff, parents and communities. In addition, we carry out early childhood parent education programs that prepare children for school and teach parents to be lifelong educators and advocates for their children.

Parents Plus programs are funded through United States Department of Education Grant #84.310A, United States Department of Health and  Human Services Grant #90FEO113/01, Children’s Hospital and Health System Child Abuse Prevention Fund and Greater Milwaukee Foundation.

For more information, please contact the PIRC Director, Yvette Dobbs, via email, or phone 414-755-8702.

Parents Plus is the state's Parental Information and Resource Center, or PIRC. Our programs, funded through the US Department of Education, bring together parents, schools and communities to increase student achievement.
